For those who are familiar with mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), you might consider MBSP to be a positively oriented version of MBSR. Specifically, MBSR focuses exclusively on the practice of mindfulness, while MBSP integrates mindfulness with character strengths, imbuing it with both a positive as well as more proactive orientation.
Since its introduction in 1979, there have been many research studies conducted on the effectiveness of MBSR, including documented improvements in stress reduction, improved mental and physical health, beneficial neuroplasticity (brain changes), both in the short- and long-term. To date, three peer-reviewed studies have shown better outcomes with MBSP over MBSR, particularly noting MBSP’s ability to both boost engagement, meaning, and achievement and help participants manage stress, conflicts, and adversity.
